How to Choose a Home Care Agency in Minnesota: 7 Questions That Reveal Everything
Every agency website promises compassionate, person-centered care. The differences show up later — in missed shifts, unreturned calls, and revolving-door staff. Ask these seven questions up front and you'll know what you're really signing up for.
1. What happens when a caregiver calls in sick?
The honest answers involve backup staffing plans and who calls you, by when. Vague reassurance here predicts uncovered shifts later.
2. How do you match caregivers to the person?
Listen for personality, culture, language, and interests — not just "whoever is available." The relationship is the service.
3. Who will I actually talk to when something goes wrong?
You want a name and a direct number, not a general inbox. Small agencies often win here: fewer layers between you and a decision-maker.
4. How are your staff trained, and what happens before their first solo shift?
At minimum: DHS background checks and 245D orientation, plus training specific to the person's plan before working independently.
5. What exactly is on your license?
An agency can only provide services listed on its 245D license. If you expect needs to grow — say, from companionship now to skill-building or employment support later — an agency licensed for that full range saves you from switching mid-journey.
6. How fast can you realistically start?
Anyone can say "right away." A trustworthy agency talks through authorization, planning, and staffing honestly — and tells you when the answer is "we can't staff this well."
7. Can I talk to a family or case manager who works with you?
References, reviews, and word of mouth from case managers are worth more than any brochure.
